Test before you treat

Malaria Test

A malaria rapid diagnostic test (RDT) gives a result in about 15–20 minutes, so you only take antimalarials when you really need them.

What to expect

  1. 1

A pharmacist asks about your symptoms

  2. 2

We do a finger-prick rapid test

  3. 3

If positive, we recommend the right treatment. If negative, we help you find the real cause

Not every fever is malaria. Testing first helps you get the right treatment and prevents unnecessary use of antimalarials, which contributes to drug resistance. This is in line with Ghana Health Service guidance to test before treating.

Go to a hospital immediately if the person is very drowsy, confused, having fits, unable to drink, vomiting everything, or is a young child or pregnant woman with a high fever.
