If pain or fever lasts more than 3 days, or you need paracetamol regularly, speak to a pharmacist or doctor to find the cause.
If you think someone has taken too much paracetamol, go to a hospital straight away, even if they feel well.

Paracetamol
One of the most widely used medicines for mild to moderate pain and fever. Safe for most people when taken at the right dose.

What it’s used for
- Headache and migraine
- Toothache
- Body and muscle pains
- Period pain
- Fever, including fever after vaccination
How to take it
Adults and children 16 and over: usually 500mg to 1g (one or two 500mg tablets) every 4 to 6 hours as needed. Do not take more than 4g (eight 500mg tablets) in 24 hours. Children need a lower dose based on age and weight, so use a children’s product and follow the pack or ask a pharmacist.
Always follow the label or the directions your doctor or pharmacist gave you.
Common side effects
- Side effects are rare at normal doses
- Skin rash (stop and seek advice)
Warnings
- Never take more than the maximum daily dose. Overdose can cause serious liver damage, sometimes without early symptoms
- Check other medicines for paracetamol. Many cold and flu remedies already contain it
- Talk to us first if you have liver or kidney problems, drink alcohol regularly, or weigh less than 50kg
