Metformin
The most commonly prescribed first medicine for type 2 diabetes. It helps the body use insulin better and lowers blood sugar.

What it’s used for
- Type 2 diabetes
How to take it
Take exactly as prescribed, with or just after meals to reduce stomach upset. Doctors usually start with a low dose and increase it slowly.

Common side effects
- Nausea, diarrhoea or stomach upset, usually settling after a few weeks
- Metallic taste
- Loss of appetite
Warnings
- Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems
- Avoid heavy drinking
- You may need to stop it briefly before surgery or certain scans with dye. Ask your doctor
- Long-term use can lower vitamin B12. Ask about a check if you feel very tired or have tingling feet
